    Description

    ALL ORIGINAL ANTIQUE KOREAN 3-SECTION
Chest-on-Chest or Bandaji cabinet made from Paulownia pear wood and brass hardware.
This cabinet for sale here has been ownew by the same family since it was bought in Korea as an "antique" in 1909.  For its age of well over 100 years, it is in excellent condition and is believed to be all original.  The four drawers across the top are in good shape and slide in and out.  This cabinet has been well cared for by my family since my great great grandfather bought this in Korea in 1909. He was a contributor and photographer for National Geographic Magazine and the purchase of this cabinet is discussed in an article published in National Geographic Magazine in November 1909 and he travelled the world.  Included with the cabinet are two small dog shaped locks and one key for the locks.
The cabinet measures 62 in. Tall, 43 In. wide and 23 in. Deep. and approximate weight is 100bs
As described on http://koreamosaic.net/chests/c03.htm:   "This type of chest, formally known as a "won-ang sam-chung jang," can be considered a member of the "morijang" family. The morijang is a one-level chest used for clothing and bedding, with three small drawers along the top; the "won-ang" consists of three levels. The mirror effect of the juxtaposed panels is wrought by slitting the wood and using the inside surface of each piece as the outside surface of each panel. ... Note the mirror effect in the ribs, too. Antiques specialists prefer the narrow ribs of this chest to the broader ribs of many others of the same type. "
