This is a Korean Yi Dynasty printing block. (It might be earlier) It has individually carved Chinese characters on both sides, carved backward so that the printed sheet would read properly. The Korean written language, Han Gul, had not yet been developed when this block was cut. The block is similiat to the Tripatika Koreana, which was made during the Koryo Dynasty (936-1391) to record the complete works of Buddhist thought. Wood block printing of this type began in the 8th century in Korea. A copy of "Printing Heritage" published by the Korean Overseas Information Service will be included outling the history of printing in Korea. I believe that it is now forbidden to export these blocks from Korea. This block was exported in the 1970's. It is approximately19 !/2 inches wide, end pieces are approximately 9 1/2 inches high and 2 inches thick. It has no damage or repairs and it still has the original ink on it as I hesitate to to clean antiques. I will mail anywhere.
